Officer Fired, Charged with Sending Obscene Material - WLTX.com

West Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A former officer with the West Columbia Police department is being accused of sending obscene images to an underage girl, who lives out of state.

Andrew Alan Haney, 31, is currently facing federal charges in the case.

Officers in Pleasant Hill, Iowa say they began investigating claims late last month that a man had been sending explicit images and message to a 13-year-old girl in their town.

The criminal complaint in the case states that the victim's mother found a tablet computer in the girl's room that the girl didn't own. When asked, the girl told her mother that she used the device to talk to men on the internet.

Officers reviewed the information on the computer, and say they found chats between the two where he used the name "Andy Hanes." The affidavit states there were also naked pictures of himself that he sent to the girl.

According to federal documents, investigators found clues that suggested Haney worked as a police officer in West Columbia. Investigators presented the information to West Columbia police, who confirmed that Haney worked for them.

After Haney's arrest by U.S. Marshals, West Columbia Police Dennis Tyndall fired him.

Haney had been with the department for two years.
