3927 People Killed In 12276 Road Accidents in 32 Months - Kashmir Life

As the bullets stopped, the situation have paved way for the automobiles to become the biggest killer in J&K. For the last 32 months ending August, 3927 people were killed in 17276 road accidents across J&K. Those who survived injured were at 25609.

The disturbing data pertaining to the period January 2010 to August 2012 was revealed by the state government on Tuesday. Jammu, the winter capital of the state, is emerging the capital of casualties in road accidents. The government said in 2010, Jammu witnessed 192 deaths in 1682 accidents. In 2011, there were 190 deaths in 1627 road accidents as 131 persons were killed in 1085 accidents in the first eight months of 2012.

Interestingly, Jammu also tops in the vehicular population of the state. Of all the vehicles registered across state, Jammu tops all the 22 districts. Against 31848 in 2010-11, the new registration were at 33353 in 2011-12 as the numbers surged to 12153 in the first eight months of 2012-13.

The experts say that increase in road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir is the result of growing number of vehicles and encroachment of roads in the state. "12132 vehicles were registered in Srinagar in 2010, the number increased up to 17234 in 2011 and in the first eight months 6732 vehicles have been registered in Srinagar alone," government answer said.

J&K's overall registration of the new vehicles were at 80670 in 2010-11 and 98804., In the first eight months of the current fiscal, the new registrations were at 36229.

Responding to the problem of increasing traffic in Jammu and Srinagar cities, the state government have engaged M/S RITES Ltd. For preparation of a comprehensive Mobility plan for the two capital cities. "This has been done, taking into account all aspects of mobility including pedestrians, covering long term and short term measures to overcome traffic congestion," claimed the government.

Besides, the state government has initiated the use of traffic lights to manage the traffic in the cities of Jammu and Srinagar. So far, the government has incurred an expenditure of Rs 1.89 crore in Jammu and Rs 2.08 crore in Srinagar on this account. Mechanical snags apart, these lights have suix hour power back up. Onnyx Electronics that commissioned the project is responsible for smooth operation of these signal lights for initial two years
