BJP files complaint against Aires for posting obscene picture depicting Jesus ... - Times of India

PANAJI: BJP spokesperson Wilfred Mesquita has written to the director general of police (DGP) demanding the immediate arrest of social activist and advocate Aires Rodrigues for posting an obscene picture depicting Jesus Christ on a social networking site.

"I have been receiving phone calls since morning and some people have also come and met me to inform me of a picture posted on a social networking site by a so-called Aires Rodrigues. The picture shows Lord Jesus Christ making an obscene gesture and I was hurt when the picture was shown to me," Mesquita said.

In his complaint, Mesquita has said that the picture is highly blasphemous and is a threat to the secular fabric of society.

"As a Christian I do not believe that Lord Jesus Christ can make such an obscene gesture, which is an insult to my faith and hurts the sentiments of every Christian. Such blasphemy can cause upheavals and communal tensions in the state," Mesquita said in the complaint.

He said he was surprised that Rodrigues has committed such an act despite being a Christian himself. Mesquita has attached a copy of the page on the social networking site as proof to his police complaint.

"He is the same person who had raised questions about the alleged Portuguese nationality of some in the BJP. That act was also to make implications of communal nature," Mesquita said.

DGP Kishan Kumar said, "We are examining the legalities."

The post on the social networking site takes a potshot at chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who reportedly likened himself to Jesus Christ in his suffering for the betterment of people at a recent public meeting. The depiction accompanies the post which questions "the Church's silence" on Parrikar's comment.

Reacting to the complaint, Rodrigues has dared BJP to prove their "false and fabricated allegation" that he had insulted Jesus Christ.

Referring to his post, Rodrigues stated it was without any malice and should offend none. "I have no where claimed that the picture accompanying the post was that of Jesus Christ," Rodrigues said and accused Parrikar of having insulted Christianity by comparing himself to Christ.
