CBS 3 Springfield - WSHMFamily of Springfield murder victim want violence to stop - WSHM-TV

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Troy Morris has been there for his nephew, Felix Laurent, since he was just a baby.

"I remember the first time I brought him home from the hospital when he was just a baby in my arms when he was born," Morris said.

Now his uncle is mourning his loss as Springfield police search for Laurent's killer.

"This has to come to an end at some point, I don't want anymore uncles grieving or grandmothers grieving," Morris said.

A week ago, 20-year-old Laurent had been found staggering along Wilbraham Road near Eastern Avenue, suffering from two stab wounds to the back. Someone driving by found him and rushed him to the hospital.

Laurent told police from his hospital bed that he had been attacked near DeBerry school on Union Street, but he didn't know who his attackers were.

On Wednesday he was released into his uncle's care at their Oak Grove Avenue home.

But just eight hours after his release, his uncle discovered him dead in his bed.

"My nephew was only 20 years old and this is totally uncalled for," Morris said.

Friday, the medical examiner ruled that Laurent had died from complications from the stab wounds.

Friday night his closest friends and family gathered at his home, lighting candles.

"I'm struggling still with the fact that he's gone, he's a good kid, he has a son that he looks after," said Laurent's friend, Octavia Brookens.

She says Laurent's son, just a baby, was his world.

"That's all he really talked about was his son and the fact that he loved him and always wanted to be there for him," Brookens said.

Now Morris has one request for young people just like his nephew.

"I want the young people, especially in Springfield and neighboring areas, to learn to embrace each other. I want you all to love each other, not to kill and destroy. Violence is not the answer to anything."

Police told CBS 3 they are following leads in Laurent's death.
