Lynn Police investigate gunshots, make drug arrest

LYNN — In the course of investigating reports of gunshots on Bassett Street in Lynn this afternoon, Lynn Police officers made an unrelated arrest in an alleged drug deal, according to Lynn Police Spokesman Lt. Chris Kelly.

Multiple units reported to Bassett Street about a quarter to 1 p.m. Friday for several calls of possible gunshots fired in the area, Kelly said.

Witnesses reported three Hispanic or possibly black men running from the area. But when police arrived, they found no sign of any suspects. However, as one of the team's Narc unit members fanned the area, Kelly said the officer came across what looked like a drug deal in progress on Lewis Street, nearby Brickett Elementary School.

Upon seeing the police officer, Kelly said one of the suspects started running and tossed what appeared to be a bag of drugs and his cell phone. The police officer chased him for a few minutes and eventually caught up with him nearby Lafayette Park, Kelly said.

Officers recovered a bag of percocet pills, the suspect's cell phone and a large amount of cash on the subject.

Jarmahl Sutson, 28, of 19 Amity St. in Lynn, was arrested and charged with possession of class B drugs with intent to distribute, being charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and drug violation as well as a school zone violation.

Kelly said the shooting is still under investigation, but officers believe the two incidents are unrelated.
