Bullitt County walk remembers 2007 murder victim - WDRB

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---An event in Bullitt County on Saturday aimed to raise awareness of domestic violence, and to remember a Shepherdsville woman who was murdered 5 years ago.

Among the dozens of people walking, there are many stories of survival.

"My mother's a survivor. She survived 25 years of physical and mental abuse. My first two marriages were domestic related," says Paulette Aeguay, an activist and survivor.

"By the time we hit our 1-year-anniversary, his verbal and physical violence was almost daily," one woman said while on the stage.

The walk also included people with family members who lost their lives in domestic violence relationships.

"How can you have a wedding, take an oath that you love someone and protect someone and then kill someone. It's just unbelievable," says Jerry Nugent.

Jerry and Della Nugent are the parents of 22-year-old Kimberly Nugent Hallman.

In 2007, the then University of Louisville student was murdered at her Shepherdsville home.

Her husband, Steven Hallman, was charged for the crime and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

"She loved people in general. She didn't see bad in anybody and I think that's probably what her downfall was. She thought she loved someone so much that she could change them, and it doesn't work like that," says Della Nugent.

Kimberly's parents were among the people raising awareness of domestic violence on Saturday.

"I heard my husband say it would be fun to stab someone, I realized, I could be that someone," one woman told the crowd.

It's stories like this that are encouraging people to get help.

"We want Bullitt County residents to know that we care and we'll stand by until you won't be by yourself," says Pauletta Aeguay.

The Nugent family is just hoping their daughter's story doesn't go unnoticed with other victims.

"If we can make a difference with one person, if we could help save one person, then we've accomplished what we wanted to do," says Jerry Nugent.

The Center for Women and Families helped organize the event.

Participants say the goal is to get a Safe House in Bullitt County, to give women in the county a local place to go for help.
