Eighteen people were killed and five others remain trapped underground on Saturday after a gas and coal outburst in a mine pit in southwest China's Guizhou Province, the official News Agency Xinhua reported citing local authorities.
The accident occurred at the Xiangshui Coal Mine in Panxian County of the coal-rich Liupanshui City. The coal mine is affiliated to the Guizhou Panjiang Group.
Altogether 28 miners were trapped underground when the accident happened, Xinhua reported citing provincial government and Panjiang group sources.
The agency said five miners had been rescued and five others were still trapped.
In another accident, 14 people were killed and 47 others injured after an explosion at a hot pot restaurant in north China's Shanxi Province on Friday evening.
The explosion triggered a blaze at the Xiyangyang (Happy Sheep) Hot Pot Restaurant in Shouyang County of Jinzhong City.
Initial investigations showed the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
The powerful explosion shattered the windows of the two-storey restaurant and some neighboring shops as far as 20 meters away. Iron gates of some shops were twisted by the force of the explosion, Xinhua reported.
