I read with utter disbelief Finance Minister Mike de Jong's comments regarding the obscene pay increases Premier Christy Clark has doled out. He thought the people would "understand a new government with a new mandate with a re-elected premier may make changes of these sorts."
No, we don't. The salaries for public service are very generous, and I don't recall the B.C. Liberal platform calling for increases in their salaries if elected. It is incredibly dismissive of the voters and so very self-serving.
To add insult to injury, de Jong further states that the money was found within existing budgets ("reallocation," the magic government word for smoke and mirrors) and there is "no overall increase to taxpayers."
How gullible does he think we are? Every time government spends our money, it costs us. It doesn't matter what shell it was found under, it's our money.
I wish Clark had been more open with her intentions before the election. If this is any sign of how the B.C. Liberals will be governing (looking after themselves first), we are in for a long, painful term.
