Driving Impaired by Drugs Arrest Following West Babylon Crash - Patch.com

A motorcyclist lost part of his leg and a driver was arrested for driving while his ability was allegedly impaired by drugs following a car crash in West Babylon on Sunday evening, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Suffolk County Police said James Kavanaugh, 22, of West Babylon, was attempting to turn his 2003 Chystler vehicle from southbound Belmont Avenue onto eastbound Van Buren Street when he collided with a 2000 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Raymond Card, 48, of Huntington, who was heading northbound on Belmonth Avenue at about 6:30 p.m.

The impact crushed Card's leg and he was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where doctors were forced to surgically remove his left leg below the knee.

Suffolk County Police placed Kavanaugh under arrest at the scene and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while his Ability was Impared by Drugs. He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 15th at the First District Court in Central Islip.

Police are continuing their investigation of the accident and ask anyone with information to contact the First Precinct at (631) 854-8152.
