2 shot, killed in Newark's West Ward - NJ.com

NEWARK — A man and a woman were shot and killed in Newark's West Ward this afternoon in what appears to have been a targeted shooting, Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, said in a press release this evening.

Police were called to the intersection of South 10th Street and 15th Avenue about 3:40 p.m. on reports of a shooting in progress, he said.

When they arrived, they found the two people unresponsive in a vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, Ambrose said.

Neither was identified pending notification of next-of-kin, he said.

Police had cordoned off 15th Avenue between 9th Street and 11th Street, where dozens of people gathered.

Two vehicles, a brown sedan and a black SUV, facing opposite directions, appeared to have crashed into each other and come to a stop on South 10th Street just north of 15th Avenue.

Witnesses there said the driver of the SUV had chased the sedan to the intersection, where as many as seven shots rang out.

The killings were Newark's 63rd and 64th this year, and follow a spasm of bloodshed that saw 10 people killed in a 10-day period ending last week.

At the intersection of 15th Avenue and 9th Street, several people gathered, including the mother of the woman who had been shot, according to several community activists. In between loud, long sobs, she railed against the continuing violence.

Pastor Thomas Ellis, an outreach minister with Newarks' Enough is Enough coalition, said the violence will only be quelled when enough people speak up.

"Everybody needs to feel the anger and the anguish and the emotion that she is feeling," Ellis said.

South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka, who arrived at the scene shortly before 7 p.m., said a multipronged effort, from the schools, businesses, authorities and the courts, among others, is needed to alleviate the violence.

"The whole city, every institution, has to bear down on this," he said.
