A head-on collision late Sunday in Aurora killed three people, including two women from Montgomery who were in a van with five other family members, police said.

Aurora police on Monday were investigating the circumstances of the crash, which took place about 11:50 p.m. Sunday on Broadway Avenue, just south of the Hazel Avenue intersection, police said.

As of Monday evening, police had not released identities of those killed.

The women who died, ages 57 and 77, were in a 2006 Chrysler minivan that was struck by a 2007 Dodge Charger driven by a 28-year-old Aurora man, who also was killed, Sgt. Kevin Convey said Monday.

Convey said the other five passengers in the van were taken to area hospitals, and although they suffered broken bones and serious injuries, they are expected to recover.

The driver of the Charger was the sole occupant in his vehicle, police said.

According to police, the van was going south on Broadway when it was struck by the Charger, which was traveling north, but police were still investigating the accident and said they could not yet provide additional details. A memorial to the victims was set up at the crash site.

Police said they don't know whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Police asked anyone with information to call 630-256-5330.
