Two Liverpool women arrested over £170k drugs haul - Liverpool Echo

Two Liverpool women were arrested after police seized around £170,000 worth of drugs from a hotel room in the Isle of Man.

The women, aged 24 and 27, were detained in Douglas at 6.30am yesterday.

The arrests were part of a joint investigation –  Operation Ring of Steel – between the island's Pro Active team, police dog unit and Customs and Excise targeting the importation of controlled drugs to the Isle of Man.

As part of the haul around £108,000 of cannabis resin was seized and what was thought to be £62,000 worth of cocaine.

The two women were being questioned at the Isle of Man's  police headquarters

Det Sgt Paul Holland of the Pro Active Team said: "Seizing approximately £170,000 of controlled drugs destined for the Isle of Man is a significant seizure.

"I would like to thank the Dog Unit and Customs and Excise for their continued support. This highlights the need for the continued partnership work to remove controlled drugs from the streets of the Isle of Man.

"This further reinforces the message to these individuals intent on importing and supplying controlled drugs to the Isle of Man that a robust stance will be taken."

Det Sgt Holland also warned of the large increase in custodial sentence times on the Isle of Man compared to the UK.

He told the ECHO: "We want to warn people who are thinking about importing drugs into the Isle of Man that there are tough penalties for anyone caught with drugs in their possession."

Under new guidelines there is a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison for anyone caught and convicted of over 400g of Class A drugs in a powder form in their possession and a penalty of  five to eight years for those with up to 20 grams.

For Class A drugs in tablet form the tariff is five to eight years for up to 500 tablets and a maximum of 12 years and upwards for 5,500 tablets or more.

Det Sgt Holland added: "Offenders will be dealt with robustly to the full extent of the law and these sentences are being utilised on the Isle of Man."
