Gresham murder suspect had history of violence - kgw.com

GRESHAM, Ore. – The man accused of murdering his estranged wife and kidnapping his 2-year-old daughter Saturday in Gresham had a history of violence, according to restraining orders filed with the Clackamas County Court.

Joshua Cavett, 36, was accused of shooting his 28-year-old wife, Jessie, in the head just before noon on Saturday. Joshua Cavett also allegedly kidnapped the couple's 2-year-old daughter, spurring an Amber Alert.

Jessie Cavett died Sunday evening at Oregon State Health & Science University. An autopsy confirmed she died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

According to a restraining order filed on Aug. 5 by Jessie, Joshua had beaten his wife multiple times before and threatened to kill her.

Jessie reported that on April 15, Joshua "pushed me on our couch and proceeded to hit my head over and over again followed by him kicking me in the stomach," according to the restraining order.

On July 16, she reported that he "wants to torture me by giving me a 'Hot Shot' or tying me up to a chair to peel my skin off layer by layer and light me on fire alive."

On August 4, she said, "Josh has repeated the torture...sent me a text message that he will handle me with his bare hands."

But the restraining order didn't stop Joshua Cavett from allegedly murdering his wife.

According to court documents filed Monday, police arrived at Jessie Cavett's home on Saturday and found her lying near the front door of her apartment with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Police also found her 5-year-old daughter in the apartment and took her from the home.

Later that day, the girl told police that "Josh shot mommy," according to Det. Ryan Gleason of the Gresham police.

Joshua Cavett was arrested at 9 p.m. Saturday. His 2-year-old daughter was also found safe.

Cavett's backpack contained a loaded firearm, according to court documents. Another apartment he had previously been in contained three other firearms and ammunition.

According to the affidavit, Cavett told a Portland police officer, "I'm not going to complain. I [expletive] killed somebody."

Court documents say that Jessie had recently filed for divorce from Joshua Cavett. They were told that he was with a woman named Keshia at the time.
