SAN LEANDRO -- The Alameda County Coroner has identified one of two people killed in a fatal mobile home fire last week as Leonard Hogue Jr., 56, of San Leandro.

Hogue and a woman who has yet to be identified died during the one-alarm blaze that broke out just before 3:30 a.m. Sept. 4 in the Estudillo Trailer Park at 1648 Grand Ave.

Authorities have not yet released the woman's name as officials have not been able to locate her next of kin, a coroner's spokeswoman said Friday.

On the day of the blaze, a coroner's deputy said that the severe burns to the victims' bodies would make fingerprint identification difficult.

Battalion Chief Chuck Palmer said when firefighters entered the trailer, they found one victim in a bed and a second elsewhere in the trailer.

Smoke from the fire woke neighbors in the mobile home park, some of whom said they heard the female victim shouting for help.

Mildred Ortiz, a resident of the mobile home park for six years, said a friend and her son ran to the trailer and tried to break down the door and shatter the windows but that the latter were covered with thick cardboard. When someone finally pried open the door, the fire expanded to the front of the trailer in an instant, she said.

Ortiz said garbage was strewed over the floor of the trailer and piled several feet high, preventing anyone from entering after the door was open. She said thick smoke and the heat of the flames also prevented them from rescuing the two.

No other trailers in the mobile home park were damaged, and no one else was hurt.
