Nairobi, Kenya: Seven men including two Indians, two Tanzanians and three Kenyans have been arrested for allegedly manufacturing Methamphetamine in Nairobi's Ruiru area.

Several kilogrammes of the psychotropic drugs were seized during an operation at the weekend.

The men were nabbed by officers from Anti-Narcotics Unit and Special Crimes Prevention Unit at a factory that has been manufacturing the drugs for export to South Africa.

Police say they will appear in court on Monday to face possession and drug trafficking charges.

They were also found with ephedrine that is usually used to manufacture cocaine.

According to head of SCPU Noah Katumo, the laboratory started its operations in early August 2013 and it is not clear if any of the drug had been exported.

Among those arrested were Indians Zkir Hussein and Antony Paul who were doing the engineering part at the laboratory and Tanzanians Rumishael Mamkuu Shoo and January Ghabriel Liundi who were to take out the drugs to the intended market in South Africa.

One of the Kenyan identified Sammy Karanja Njau has been described as a serial drug trafficker and was thought to be the main man behind the laboratory while the others are workers.

Methamphetamine is highly addictive and can cause serious implications on human body.

Katumo said the materials seized can be used to manufacture methamphetamine, which has been placed under the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances Treaty.

When abused, Methamphetamine increases alertness, concentration, energy, and in high doses, can induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem and increase libido.
