Drug Trafficker Arrested After Largest Heroin Ring in Buffalo History
Buffalo, NY – State Police today announced the arrest of Eury Rodriguez (pictured), 33 of Queens, New York on charges he was a major supplier of heroin from the Bronx to Buffalo. Rodriguez is being charged under the Drug Kingpin Law for moving more than seven kilos of heroin with an estimated street value of $3.5 million.
In March of 2011, following an 11 month long investigation, Rodriguez was one of 15 individuals named in a 51-count indictment, but he managed to go underground and avoid arrest. Members of the State Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in White Plains tracked leads on Rodriguez for the next 23 months. Investigators located Rodriguez and took him into custody without incident on Thursday, January 31.
Members of the SIU, working with the State Police Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) from Western New York were determined to locate Rodriguez despite reports he had left the country.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said, "We will leave no stone unturned to rid our communities of dangerous criminals who bring illegal drugs into our neighborhoods. These deadly narcotics must be taken off our streets. The focus and dedication of State Police members of the SIU and CNET working closely with the New York State Attorney General's Organized Crime Task Force (OCTF) demonstrates the commitment to combat illegal drug activity across our state."
The alleged drug distribution network that brought large quantities of heroin from the Bronx to the cities of Rochester and Buffalo was dismantled 23 months ago as a result of hundreds of hours of covert surveillance and the use of wiretap evidence. With the arrest of Rodriguez, the alleged ring leader of the heroin distribution operation is now in custody. Additional arrests are pending.
"This drug kingpin terrorized communities across New York State, we are safer now that he is in custody thanks to the persistent, collaborative efforts of our investigators," said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. "This arrest sends a message to our state's most wanted criminals that we will find you and we will bring you to justice. Under our Major Drug Trafficker statute, dealers and distributors like Eury Rodriguez could face up to life behind bars. With our partners in law enforcement, we are holding drug kingpins accountable for their crimes."
Eury Rodriguez, 33 of Queens, NY will be arraigned on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in New York State Supreme Court, Erie County on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree, criminal sale of a controlled substance in the first degree, conspiracy in the second degree, and operating as a major trafficker.
The case is being prosecuted by OCTF Assistant Deputy Attorney General Patricia I. Carrington.
