One of the defendants on trial for the violent murder of a man in Virginia Highland, has now unexpectedly turned state's witness. Raphael Cross is now testifying against two of the defendants, Tamario Wise and Robert Veal.
In court on Friday, Cross says he saw the struggle between the victim, Charles Boyer, and fellow defendants Wise and Veal, minutes before Boyer was fatally shot.
All four of the men on trial were alleged members of the so-called "Jack Boys" gang which is blamed for a violent, murderous rampage throughout east Atlanta back in November 2010.
Tarmario Wise is being identified as the ring-leader. Fernandez Whatley is the fourth defendant accused of murder, rape and aggravated assault in a month-long spree of robberies, home invasions and carjackings. The violence reached its peak when a Virginia Highlands woman was raped hours after Charles Boyer was shot and killed during a robbery attempt.
Boyer was reportedly returning with his girlfriend from a nearby store when he encountered the men and was fatally shot.
The crime spree lasted from Oct. 19 to Nov. 27, and garnered considerable media attention as area law enforcement collected victims' stories, and eventually video footage of possible suspects.
This week the four suspects have been on trial and Cross is now testifying against his co-defendants in the case.
