Two men from Lancaster and three out-of-state men face drug charges after police say an Upper Allen Township police officer stopped to render them assistance when their car ran out of gas.
A police officer was traveling behind their car at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 when their vehicle ran out of gas in the 2400 block of South Market Street, according to police.
When the officer stopped to render assistance, police say it became apparent that the occupants had been smoking marijuana. Following an investigation, marijuana and paraphernalia were seized from the vehicle, according to police.
The driver, George Z. Smith, 22, of Oakland, N.J., was arrested and charged with DUI of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
The remaining passengers Christopher J. Bosch, 19, of Lancaster; Joshua D. Taylor, 20, of Columbus, Ohio; Johnpaul I. Bertuglia, 20, of Simsbury, Conn.; and Andrew B. Cortese, 20, of Lancaster were charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
All were taken to the Cumberland County Booking Center where they were processed and released.
All defendants will appear for a preliminary hearing before Senior District Judge Brenda Knepper at a later date.
