Two people killed in early morning New Year's Day crash - ActionNewsJax.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It was a tragic start to the new year for two people traveling on Atlantic Boulevard just 28 minutes after midnight.

A man and woman lost their lives after a station wagon crossed their path causing them to lose control.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has still not determined if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The man and woman were traveling eastbound on Atlantic Boulevard when a Dodge Magnum, that was exiting a shopping center, pulled out in front of them.

"The station wagon struck the left side of the SUV flipped several times, came to rest on the occupant's side," said Detective J.C. Hurst of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Both people were pronounced dead on the scene.

"It skidded on the median, past the median and now it's going the opposite direction. I almost touched it. The SUV flipped three or four times," said Ranze Nazare, eye witness.

Glass and debris spread across all three eastbound lanes and two of the westbound lanes. It took crews seven hours to clear the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Magnum was transported to UF & Shands Jacksonville with minor injuries. It has not been determined if the driver will face any charges.
