Couple arrested in Framingham on drug distribution charges - MetroWest Daily News

A Framingham couple pulled over by police looking for someone wanted on a warrant were arrested on cocaine and heroin charges after police saw bags of drugs in the car, authorities said.

Angel Mateo Gonzalez, 19, and his wife Joanna M. Ortiz, 24, were both arrested on George Street on Saturday at 10:50 a.m., police spokesman Lt. Ron Brandolini said.

Police were looking for a man for whom they had a warrant and they believed he might be in the BMW Gonzalez and Ortiz were in. An officer pulled the car over but the person they were seeking was not in the car.

As the officer began to walk back to his car, he noticed a "commotion" coming from the car and ordered both people out, Brandolini said.

Inside, the officers found a "number of glassine baggies containing a brown powdery substance and a white powdery substance," prosecutor Nate Burris said during the pair's Framingham District Court arraignment on Monday.

Police arrested Ortiz and Gonzalez, both of 22A Carlson Road, and charged them with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

Prosecutors did not ask for bail for Ortiz, but asked that Gonzalez be held on $1,000 bail because he had a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer and if he is not held, immigration could take custody of him, Burris said.

Gonzalez's lawyer, Michael Brennan, asked Judge Douglas Stoddart to release Gonzalez. He said there was no proof there was any intention to distribute the drugs. In addition, he said Ortiz is scheduled to give birth to the couple's child next week.

Stoddart ordered Gonzalez held on $500. Gonzalez and Ortiz are both due back in court on Oct. 24 for a pretrial conference.
