More than 50 people in Middlesex County wanted on various charges were taken off the streets Monday as part of the three-month-long investigation called "Operation Archangel."
Middletown Superior Court was non-stop busy with arraignments Monday afternoon as 56 people were arrested this morning as part of a massive warrant round up "to seek out and take into custody the region's most wanted people."
"They're off the street right now, they'll have to answer a judge now," said Marshal Joe Faughnan, who is the United States Marshal for the District of Connecticut. "I think their communities will be a little bit safer today after being removed from the streets. Some will make bond but they all know the long arm of the law can reach out and grab them."
The suspects ranged in ages from 17 to 51 years old with charges ranging from sexual assaults to arson to drugs. Suspects were arrested in Cromwell, Clinton, Old Saybrook, Portland, Middletown, Middlefield and East Hampton.
"Today those that have allegedly violated the law and have caused innocent people to become victims of crime were arrested, charged and placed in the hands of our criminal justice system," said Peter McShane, who is the states attorney for Middlesex County.
McShane said he believes getting the federal help is the reason they were able to get them all at once.
"It really was an intensified effort in the past few weeks that narrowed down where some of these people were," McShane said.
The U.S. Marshals said they are working with other counties on similar operations.
"The U.S. Marshal Service stands at the ready to assist our state and local law enforcement partners in capturing those who attempt to elude justice," Faughnan said in a statement Monday.
