Columbus Police seized more than $18,000 worth of hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana and arrested two people Friday to stop an alleged drug operation they believe was serving teens and others.
Cops also found a large amount of cash, ledgers recording sales of drugs, scales and a semi-automatic handgun, according to police spokesman Lt. Matt Myers.
In recent weeks, residents reported to police suspicious activity and foot traffic at a residence at 2127 California St. Myers said the department's narcotics unit began
surveillance.
Police obtained a search warrant late Friday afternoon and Lt. Steve Norman arrested Trent J. Burton, 23, owner of the home. He faces preliminary charges of dealing marijuana, a Class D felony, possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and dealing in a controlled substance, a Class B felony.
He was taken to Bartholomew County Jail, where is being held on $75,000 bond.
Marty J. Sutton, 18, of 205 Walnut St., Jonesville, also was arrested at the home on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana.
Myers said the drugs amounted to 10 pounds of mushrooms and one pound of marijuana. He said police were especially concerned because the residence is close to Columbus North High School.
Myers called hallucinogenic mushrooms "kind of a club drug," especially among the younger set. He said police still are trying to determine how many people were involved in illegal transactions at the home.
"We realize that marijuana is legal in some states," Myers said. "But not in Indiana. So we will continue to enforce state law."
