Police brace for more gangland violence - ABC Online

Police are bracing for an escalation in gangland violence after a crime family matriarch was shot in Sydney at the weekend.

The woman was shot four times at point-blank range in the legs when she opened the front door of her Auburn unit on Saturday.

The attack was one of six shootings in Sydney in six days.

Four of them took place over the weekend.

A senior police source says the 43-year-old woman is believed to be the aunt of Supermax high-security prisoner and convicted murderer Bassam Hamzy, who founded the Brothers For Life street gang.

Only a few blocks away, shots were fired into a house next door to the home of convicted drug dealer Hakan Goktas.

The two shootings took place just twenty minutes apart.

Detectives believe the attacks were retribution for Goktas's cooperation with police when he was the victim of a shooting last year.

A number of men with ties to Brothers For Life have been shot dead in the past seven months.

A major investigation, codenamed Strike Force Earp, is looking into six shooting murders in south west Sydney and several other attacks linked to the gang.

They include:

The execution-style murder of Bachir Arja, 28, at Punchbowl on December 18.

The murder of 38-year-old fruit shop owner and father of four Ali Eid, who was related to Mr Arja by marriage, and the attempted murder of electrician Mohammed Hannouf, 34, at Punchbowl on November 27.

The murder of Comanchero bikie Faalau Pisu, 23, and the shooting of two other men at a bikie wedding at Canley Vale on November 5.

The murder of Brothers For Life gang member Yehya Amoud and attempted murder of his friend, Bassam Hijazi, in a car at Greenacre on October 14.

The double murders of convicted drug cook and restaurant owner Roy Yaghi, 33, and his friend Jamie Grover, 27, in a ute at South Wentworthville on August 30.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in a driveway scrawled with "Brothers 4 Life" graffiti in the same street as Bassam Hamzy's aunt in August.
