PHOENIX -- The father of a young Valley woman killed in front of her baby was in shock Thursday night after the victim's ex-boyfriend is arrested for the grisly murder.
"Fabian and Alexis did not deserve this," said Robert Munoz, grieving the loss of his 20-year-old daughter, Alexis Garcia.
She and her friend, 17-year-old Fabian Valenzuela, were shot and killed police said by Richard Luzania and Christian Arguelles.
Garcia's aunt, Terry Chavez, said Garcia and Luzania dated off and on for 3 years. They even shared a 4-month-old baby boy, but Chavez said the relationship was violent.
"She's called for help, but just to friends and family, but she never really called the police," said Chavez.
Chavez said Garcia stayed despite the abuse because she loved Luzania.
"Not for one second will I believe this guy cared for my daughter if he beat her, almost ran her over, and if he's the one who shot her," said Munoz.
Victim advocates like Patricia Klahr, CEO of Chrysalis, say domestic violence victims are often afraid to report it.
"A lot of times we think things are going to get better, it doesn't always get better," said Klahr. "You can't force someone to come in to get help, you can get them referrals."
And often she said it is friends and family who call.
"It might be a parent who contacts us and says I believe my daughter is in an abusive relationship what can I do to help." Klahr said
Klahr added that you shouldn't judge, but you should offer advice.
Chavez just wishes now they'd done more to protect Garcia.
"You know it's a bad situation, you know call the police, do something because this is what something is going to lead to," stated Chavez.
