Police arrested several party-goers at an eclipse music festival at Palmer River, south-west of Cooktown, in far north Queensland.

Nearly 10,000 people are at the week-long festival.

Senior Sergeant Chris Hodgman says most have been well behaved but some have been caught with drugs.

"We've certainly dealt with people in possession of dangerous drugs so we've charged a number of people and we continue to be vigilant," he said.

"There's been no incidents of violence in any way - it's just a matter of people being in possession of small quantities of drugs."

Police say the rescue chopper has been kept busy during the festival.

Senior Sergeant Hodgman says several revellers have been transported to Cairns Base Hospital.

He says the helicopter has had to land on the Mulligan Highway to pick them up.

"Some people have been having too good a time I think and the ingestion of drugs has been quite frequent up here," he said.

"People just don't know their own limits and some of them are just crazy for even attempting to try stuff they don't even know.

"Unfortunately the chopper has been quite busy in and out of the festival site."

Meanwhile, police have praised the behaviour of locals and the many tourists in Cairns.

Senior Constable Russell Parker says there were no major problems during the eclipse or subsequent celebrations.

"We were running a major incident room in conjunction with the eclipse event just in case events occurred that we needed to address straight away," he said.

"But they had a very easy time up in the major incident room.

"The event was monitored and we really identified no problems whatsoever."
