Stopping Gun Violence On The West Side - WKRC TV Cincinnati

A judge set bond at $1 million for a man arrested last night for a murder on East Price Avenue Monday. Carl Stevelt is charged with killing Steven Darden on Price Avenue.

Darden worked at a group home there, and right now there is no explanation for his murder.. The same goes for other murders on the city's Westside in the past week. Cincinnati's police chief says the Westside is going to be getting special attention and resources. Local 12 news reporter Deborah Dixon shows us their plan.

There have been five shootings in six days on the west side-three of them ended in death. East and West Price Hill hit the top 10 list of neighborhoods with the most shooting victims, up 50 percent in West Price Hill over last year.

The violence on the West Side is not about gangs fighting between each other. It seems more personal.  For example, Raymond Jennings, who was killed on Warsaw, may have been murdered because of a woman he was with. "It could have been me or me with him, we were always together.  That's what scares me the most."

But to David White, death is part of living here. "It's the way of life right now in the streets. Killed at 18 is how it goes? If somebody wants you dead."

"I've never seen Price Hill like this." Patti Hogan's lived in Price Hill all her life. The community activist says she's begging for help. "I've talked to the CIRV street workers they're going to help us."

"The goal here is to disrupt their activity." Disrupting activity that leads to violence will involve Cincinnati's Initiative to Reduce Violence and other partners such as ATF and FBI . The strategy will begin next year. "The process to identify who we believe through data personal knowledge and police input our most violent offenders I will tell you we already have them identified."

Violent people identified...targeted and arrested for crimes that can take them off the streets of Cincinnati's west side for a very long time.

The strategy that's being worked out for the west side has been successful in Avondale, which hasn't had a homicide this year.
