A night of violence leaves one man dead and another behind bars. This is the second Oak Hill murder in just five days, now a community wants some answers.
Mother nature is sending a wave of arctic air to our area, but going on in Fayette County another trend is emerging, a wave of violent crime. Now the community is on edge and looking for answers.
"Well it is something new. It is getting pretty scary especially an elderly person living alone," Thelma Phillips of Oak Hill said.
Police said it happened at an apartment building on East Main Street in Oak Hill. Police officers were called on a trespassing complaint. The call quickly turned into a murder investigation when they found the lifeless body of Michael Sheet lying on the ground.
A short time after the discovery Jeffery Lafferty, the tenant of the apartment, was arrested and charged with murder.
This isn't the only night of violence that happened in Oak Hill since the new year began. A violent murder happened on Mahan Street only days before. Oak Hill police said 25-year-old Maurice McCain died from a gunshot wound and 23-year-old Terreque Gray is behind bars for that crime. Local business owners on main street are shocked to learn the deadly details.
"Well God didn't mean for it to be like this. We shouldn't kill each other, we should take care of each other and people get mad and they want to kill each other." said Bill Graham who owns a barber shop in Oak Hill. "It makes no sense, people should think before they act."
Graham has been in business for 13 years and he said crime is on the rise. Both his shop and his home were broken into. However, no suspects were ever caught.
Graham did say he was grateful that police have quickly captured suspects in the murder investigations, but he wonders what else can be done to stop the violence.
