Two people were killed in separate hit-and-run accidents in Long Beach within a three-hour period Saturday night and early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The first incident took place about 10 p.m. on the southbound 710 Freeway, when an alleged drunk driver in a 1997 Chevy Tahoe entered the freeway and began heading north in the southbound lanes.
He collided with a 1987 Honda Accord. Tricia Esmond Cade, 27, a passenger in the Honda, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Honda, a 26-year old from Long Beach, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Tahoe, Derrick Armstrong, 33, of Buena Park got out of his vehicle and ran from the scene of the accident, police said. He was chased and detained by witnesses and then arrested and booked for driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and hit and run. He is being held in Long Beach City Jail on $100,000 bail.
The second incident involved a pedestrian struck while crossing Pacific Coast Highway just west of Junipero Avenue.
Adolfo Lopez-Perez of Long Beach, 33, was hit by a 1997 Geo Prism about 12:45 a.m. Officers subsequently found the Geo abandoned a few blocks away and impounded it for further investigation. They said the driver remains at large.
