Four people killed in car crashes within 24 hours - WAFB 9 News Baton Rouge ... - WBXH

CONVENT, LA (WAFB) -

Four people have died in car crashes in the area in the past 24 hours. A woman from Walker is the latest victim. She was killed in St. James Parish this Wednesday morning. State troopers the rash of deadly wrecks is unusual and some could have been avoided.

So far, 2013 has been a year filled with tragedy on roadways across South Louisiana.

"In January we've had seven. And it's only the sixth day of February, and we've had four already....three in of which were one day," said Jared Sandifer, Louisiana State police spokesperson.

Sandifer is talking about the number of traffic fatalities in the area. State police investigated three wrecks on Tuesday---in Pointe Coupee, Ascension and Livingston parishes. Just before six o'clock Wednesday morning in St. James parish, investigators say 38 year old Amy Harold Cuti was killed when the driver of the truck she was in crossed the center lane on Highway 3125 in convent. Investigators say Cuti was not wearing a seatbelt.

"We don't like giving those death notifications to the families. It's very simple," said Sandifer. "Just keep the distractions away. Put the cell phone down while you're driving. During times of inclement weather, just alter you driving behavior...slow down a little bit, put your headlights on, give yourself a little extra time to get to where you're going."

Sandifer says drivers also need to be extremely cautious when driving through construction zones. He says work crews, equipment and changes to lanes could prove dangerous to drivers who are not paying attention.

Troopers say the driver, 40 year old Jason Glascock, wasn't buckled up either. He is being treated for serious injuries.

Investigators say heavy fog may have been a factor in the crash. It is unknown if impairment played a part. A sample of Glascock's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime lab for analysis.

Glascock was charged with negligent injuring and driving left of center. Troopers said additional charges are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
