A Matamoros man is in federal custody following his arrest on drug smuggling charges.

Authorities report Gabriel Zuñiga Moreno, 22, tried to smuggle nine pounds of methamphetamines across Gateway International Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The allegations are listed in a news release and federal court documents.

Authorities report that as Zuñiga crossed the bridge, his 1991 Honda Accord was sent for a secondary inspection, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release.

In the secondary inspection area, CBP officers found four packages of methamphetamine hidden within the car's dashboard, authorities said. The drugs have an estimated street value of $135,000.

According to federal court documents, in a subsequent interview Zuñiga admitted to being involved in a bulk cash smuggling scheme during this trip.

Zuñiga appeared Monday before U.S. Magistrate Felix Recio on the charge of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. His bail was set at $200,000 and he was turned over to federal authorities after failing to post bond.

Zuñiga's next court appearance, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled Feb. 14.
