NDLEA arrests 111 drug suspects in 2012 in Gombe - Daily Times Nigeria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)says it arrested no fewer than 111 suspects, including a woman in Gombe State in 2012. The state NDLEA Commandant, Mr Aliyu Adole, who made this known in an interview in Gombe on Tuesday, said 155.3kg of hard drugs were recovered.

"The number of suspects arrested last year was 110 males and one female and the quantity of hard drugs recovered from circulation was 155.3kg. In 2011, we recovered over 800kg of hard drugs but in 2012 we had more conviction of drug suspects than what we had in 2011," he said.

Adole said that 65 drug suspects were convicted for drug offences in 2012 and given various jail terms without option of fine. He added that 10 suspects were presently awaiting trial for various drug offences, while five drug dependent people were counselled in 2012 and released to their families.

The commandant said the agency had embarked on sensitising people in the local government areas on the dangers of using hard drugs. Adole appealed to traditional rulers and teachers to advice their wards on the dangers of taking hard drugs without doctor's prescription.

He urged the state governor to assist the agency with logistic and also fulfil the promise he made to construct rehabilitation centre for drugs victims in the state.
