NEW HAVEN —  A New Haven man was arrested for allegedly stealing a Hertz car and for possession of several drugs on Friday.

Officer Brian McDermott followed a car that had a tail light out. The car's operator, Anthony Harrell, made an improper turn at Eastern Street and Foxon Boulevard, according to police.

McDermott noticed a bag of heroin in the door's armrest while Harrell was searching his glove compartment for paperwork. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded ten bags of heroin, four bags of marijuana and four cellular telephones, according to police.

The car had originally been rented by Harrell from Hertz, but was long overdue, according to police. Harrell was charged with eight drug crimes, two motor vehicle violations and larceny of a motor vehicle.
