A 16-YEAR-OLD girl was granted $25,000 bail when she appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate yesterday charged with wounding a police officer, resisting arrest and using obscene language.
The girl initially appeared before Magistrate Christine Charles in the Fifth Court during the morning period and pleaded guilty to the charge of using obscene language.
She was not called upon to plead to the other two charges as they were laid indictably. However, the matter did not proceed until the afternoon period as her criminal background trace was not available when the matter was first called.
When the matter was recalled shortly after 1 p.m. before Charles, police prosecutor Sgt Cheli Logie said the prosecution was not making any objection to bail as the criminal background trace showed she had no offences attached to her name.
The offences for which the girl is charged are alleged to have taken place yesterday morning along Western Main Road, St James against PC Nazardean Khan.
Despite her guilty plead to the charge of using obscene language, the facts in the matter were not read.
Instead, Charles gave the teenager the opportunity to retain an attorney. The magistrate advised the girl that she had the choice of retaining a private attorney or make an application to have one appointed for her through Legal Aid.
The matter will come up for hearing again on November 15.
