3 people killed in fiery crash involving 2 semis on I-75 - WGCL Atlanta

BARTOW COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Several southbound lanes of I-75 are blocked near Cartersville after two tractor trailers wrecked, killing three people.

The accident happened around 1:50 a.m. on I-75 at mile marker 296, near Cass White Road.

A spokesman with the Georgia State Patrol said the driver of the tractor trailer in the northbound lanes of I-75 drove onto the left shoulder, hit a guardrail and crashed into a the concrete pillar of an overhead sign on the southbound side of the highway.

The tractor trailer then rolled onto its side and caught on fire.

The accident caused the overhead sign to fall and it was hit by a second tractor trailer, causing that driver to lose control and drive off the highway.

Two people in the first tractor trailer were killed in the accident, and the driver of the second tractor trailer also died.

It was not clear what caused the driver of the first tractor trailer to drive off the highway.

The northbound lanes of I-75 were closed for several hours, but have since been reopened.
