Man arrested for heroin, allegedly smuggles more drugs into jail cell - WNDU-TV

A Berrien County man is behind bars following facing a slew of preliminary drug charges.

Around 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Berrien County Sheriff Department's Narcotic's Unit served a search warrant at a home in the 15300 block of Main St. in Buchanan Township.

Two weeks ago, the Buchanan City Police Department received multiple tips of illegal drug activity inside the house. While serving the warrant, officers found three adults, $500 worth of heroin, a small amount of cocaine and other evidence of illegal drug trafficking.

Deputies arrested the homeowner, Trent Britton, 40, and transported him to the Berrien County Jail. During his booking, jailers found a small amount of heroin within Britton's "body cavity." Police believe he was trying to smuggle the contraband into his cell.

Britton faces preliminary charges of, Possession of Heroin with the Intent to Deliver 2nd Offense, Possession of Cocaine 2nd Offense, Maintaining a Drug House 2nd Offense and Smuggling Contraband into a Jail/Prison. His arraignment is pending within the Berrien County Trial Court.

The two other adults inside Britton's home were not arrested and charges are not being pursued.

The Berrien County Sheriff Department's Road Patrol, the Berrien County Sheriff Department's Criminal Investigation Unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Buchanan City Police Department assisted in the drug bust.
