The Navi Mumbai police have booked a 25-year-old man on charges of creating a fake profile of an engineering student on a social networking site and posting obscene images and vulgar messages in it. The man was arrested three days ago and was later let out on bail.
The police said Talegaon resident Bhupesh Vilas Mande wanted to take revenge on the girl student after she rejected his proposal for a love affair. Mande works as a laboratory assistant at a reputed engineering college in Rasayani, while the complainant studies at a Navi Mumbai college.
Last week, the girl approached the cyber crime cell of Navi Mumbai police alleging that someone had created fake profiles in her and her uncle's names on Facebook and was posting obscene photos and offensive messages.
Sleuths from the cyber cell began tracking the ID and managed to the get the internet protocol (IP) address of the computer used by Mande. With the help of internet service providers, they traced the computer to Shri Hari cyber café in Navi Posri village, Khalapur taluka, Raigad district.
Inspector Shekhar Bagade said Mande's cousin sister, who works at the cyber café, told them about her brother frequently visiting the place. "We then traced the IP address of another computer used by the accused, which led us to his college. We have seized the hard disks of both the computers and sent the storage devices for forensic analysis," said Bagade.
Mande has been booked under various sections of the Information Technology Act and also Section 293 (circulation of obscene material) of the IPC. The Panvel JMFC court had remanded Mande in judicial custody following which he secured bail.
