During a routine inspection of a dhow anchored in the creek, Dubai Customs seized over 30,000 Tramadol tablets and large quantities of heroin and opium. The Asian captain of the wooden vessel, Y.K., was arrested on the spot.
The massive drug seize then led police to orchestrate a large-scale operation to apprehend two of Dubai's most dangerous druglords.
On November 13, Dubai Police's anti-narcotics team carried out the successful operation and arrested the two men red-handed. Maj-Gen Abdul Jalil Mahdi, Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, attributed the success of the operation to the cooperation between the police and customs.
After careful planning, police lured the suspects to the creek — under the falsehood of a drug deal — and after witnessing the exchange of drugs for money, police ambushed the two men, A.Ff Sh and MJ. Both are well known by authorities for previous drug-related offences.
During the ambush, the second suspect tried to flee the scene in his car, but soon gave up, turning himself over to police. The three suspects were referred to Dubai Public prosecution on charges of drug possession, drug smuggling and drug abuse. They were also charged with the use of drugs, as tests conducted by the criminal evidence laboratory, proved that they had consumed Tramadol at the time of their arrest. Maj-Gen Jalil Mahdi praised Dubai Customs officials for protecting citizens and fully performing their duties, which played a massive part in the success of this operation.
