25 People Killed in Attack at Nigerian College - Afro American

Unknown assailants shot, stabbed, and killed 25 people at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi college in northeast Nigeria on Oct. 2, according to police officials.

"The latest attack occurred between 10 p.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday when assailants invaded student accommodations outside the campus of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi college," student Danjuma Aiso told The Washington Post.

Authorities believe the attack was a result of student elections at the campus.

"The crisis in Mubi is suspected to have been fueled by campus politics," Yushau Shuaib, spokesman for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency, said in a statement, according to the Post.

The violence came at a time when the town and surrounding area have been under attack by the Boko Haram radical Islamist sect. Boko Haram is an Islamic movement opposed to manmade rules and modern science. The group has attacked automatic teller machines, schools, churches, mosques and police stations. The terrorist organization has been responsible for more than 690 killings this year, according to the Associated Press, and frequently assassinates Nigerian politicians and religious figures.

The college attack occurred after three students were killed Sept. 29 outside a university campus in Maiduguri, Boko Haram's spiritual home. However, the group made no statement claiming responsibility for the Oct. 3 attack.

"Boko Haram [attackers] opens fire sporadically. They called out their victims by name and shot or slaughtered them when they identified themselves," Adamawa state police spokesman, Ibrahim Muhammad, told The Los Angeles Times. "The attackers killed 25 people in all, including 19 students of the Federal Polytechnic and three other students of the School of Health Technology. This is not the modus operandi of Boko Haram. It is the work of insiders."
