MANILA, Philippines - A man died after being pinned by an uprooted tree due to strong winds spawned by tropical storm "Ofel", bringing the death toll from the country's 15th storm to seven.
The latest fatality was identified as Napoleon Gonzales, 49. He was standing outside his house in Dumarao, Capiz, when he was hit by the uprooted tree.
Earlier, the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed six people were killed during the storm's onslaught.
Five of the fatalities were identified as Sophia Recto, 88, Torrijos, Marinduque; Rigel Saycon, 18, of Dumanjug, Cebu City; Solutiano Fabellon, 77, of Conception Romblon, Olive Belyn Luna, 18, of Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro and Roberto Manongson of Batangas City.
Nine more people, meanwhile, have been reported missing.
A total of 10,935 people were affected by the storm and as of Thursday night, a total of 11,804 passengers were stranded in various ports in Luzon, including Metro Manila, in Western and Eastern Visayas and Northern Mindanao.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), meanwhile, said that "Ofel" may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Friday afternoon.
As of 10 a.m., the storm's center was estimated at 440 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales.
The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 100 kph. It was moving west northwest at a speed of 22 kph.
PAGASA said that fishing boats and other small boats should not to venture out into the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon due to the combined effect of the storm and the surge of the Northeast Monsoon.
