Two sheriff's officers, who were in the news five years ago over a sex-tape scandal, are now facing charges of sexual assault. And one of them is also accused of administering a noxious substance to a 30-year-old woman during in an incident reported to police in May 2012.

Police announced the charges in a news release issued Friday.

The charges were authorized by the Crown in mid-October, police said, and the accused officers were arrested and charged on Wednesday.

Richard Robert Gordon, 45, and Jackie Erin Burgoyne, 34, were both charged with sexual assault. Gordon is also facing a charge of administering a noxious substance. Both were released from custody on a promise to appear on scheduled dates in court.

According to police, a woman, 30, complained that she had met a couple and went to a residence where she was allegedly drugged, causing her to pass out.

Police said the woman claims that when she woke up, she discovered she had been sexually assaulted.

Sex-tape scandal

Five years ago, Gordon and Burgoyne made headlines when they were temporarily suspended from their jobs by the Manitoba Justice Department after a sex tape they made with an adult entertainer showed up on the internet of the entertainer.

The officers went to court to get have the video removed, claiming they were too intoxicated to understand all the elements of a consent form they had signed.

A temporary injunction, ordering the sex tape removed from the internet, was maintained by the courts at the time.
